Can Air Plant Live Indoor

My sister Laura first introduced me to air plants, sometimes known as Tillandsia, a number of years ago. She was fascinated by these strange flora and wanted her sisters to experience the same thrill she did.

Every few years, my mother, sisters, and I take a weekend getaway. One of our favorite customs is to provide each person with a straightforward gift. The guidelines are straightforward: everyone receives the same item, it costs about $5, and it is something we all enjoy. (It’s a lot of fun!) Everyone received a glass teardrop terrarium for air plants from Laura.

Sadly, I didn’t think she was telling the truth. Well, that’s simple for you to say, I reasoned. You reside in a humid coastal area. I’m a resident of a dry desert. For me, these plants will never deliver.

I was mistaken. I have healthy air plants. I’m certain that everyone can cultivate healthy air plants, no matter what their climate is because of this.

I do need to water my air plants more regularly than people who live in areas with higher humidity levels because the air here is so dry. But avoid being duped, like I did. No matter where you reside, air plants make excellent interior plants.

Water

Because they do not take up moisture through their roots, tillandsia are unusual among plants. They instead use the trichomes on their leaves to absorb water. Both surfaces of the Tillandsia’s leaves are covered in these scaly or hair-like trichomes. Both rainfall and atmospheric moisture allow for the absorption of water. To adequately hydrate their trichomes as a houseplant, air plants need weekly soaks in a water bath.

These Tillandsia caput-medusae have distinct trichomes. The air plant’s distinctive shape is a result of its stiff, alien-like leaves.

Looking at an air plant’s trichomes might reveal a lot about it. Those who originate from harsher, dryer regions have trichomes that are more noticeable and display a more silvery aspect. Their leaves are fairly rigid. Trichomes shield the leaves from harsh sunlight like built-in sunscreen. Xeric Tillandsia are those that grow in arid environments.

Mesic tillandsia are those tillandsia that come from more tropical areas. Compared to xeric tillandsia, these plants are softer to the touch and less silvery. Less noticeable and possibly even minuscule, their trichomes.

The basic line for you and I is that mesic tillandsia don’t have the same high light requirements as do the xeric plants, however xeric tillandsia can tolerate more strong sun and are more drought tolerant. However, mesic air plants are less tolerant of drought than xeric ones.

A mesic variation of Tillandsia abdita can be identified by its glossy leaves and lush appearance.

No matter where you reside, you can cultivate both sorts of air plants, albeit it is helpful to know which ones you already have. Some air plants are classified as semi-mesic since they don’t fit cleanly into either group. There is also the hydric Tillandsia variant. These plants do not thrive in a domestic setting and need high levels of humidity to grow in or near water. These kinds of air plants being sold at retail is unique.

Soak Your Air Plants in Water

Your air plants need a weekly soak in tepid water since the Tillandsia’s trichomes collect water from both rain and humidity. I advise giving your plants a weekly hour-long bath. The hour time period can change. Your air plants might need less time (perhaps as little as 20 minutes) if you live in a humid climate, and they might need more time if you live in a desert (up to 4 hours).

Set your air plants on their sides or upside-down for about 4 hours after soaking them to let the extra water drain from the plant. Return the plant to its display once it has finished drying completely. By taking this action, you can keep your plant from rotting.

Even though they can’t thrive on misting alone, air plants can benefit from a good spritzing. You may also swiftly dip your air plant in water if you need to in a hurry. Just keep in mind that your air plant still needs to be soaked every week.

Light

Tillandsia, like all plants, need light to grow. A good generalization is three feet or more away from a window. As a result, your plants will be able to get enough light for photosynthetic activity without being exposed to intense direct sunlight. The best windows are those that face east, west, or south. For air plants, bright, indirect light is best.

A quick tip: While air movement is necessary for air plants, positioning them close to heating and air conditioning vents will cause them to get too dry.

Since air plants don’t require soil to grow, there are countless ways to showcase them. Other plants that depend on soil can only dream of the displays that can be made with them. In addition, air plants have a sculptural quality due to their extraordinary shape and texture. Here are a few suggestions for air plant displays to get you going.

Can air plants live inside a building?

  • The onset of curling or rolling leaves may be a sign of dehydration.
  • To fix this, immerse your plant in water for 15 minutes, shake off the excess water from the core of the plant, and then continue misting it as usual.
  • About once a month, fertilize. With the help of their foliage, air plants can absorb and store nutrients, albeit they can be vulnerable to overfertilization.
  • Utilize a high-quality, low-copper liquid or water-soluble fertilizer. Air plants are poisonous when copper concentrations are high.

Where in my home should I place an air plant?

This means that you should plan to spritz your air plant more frequently, such as twice a week or even every day, if you’re placing it where it will get a lot of light. Air Plants and Artificial Light

Do air plants produce offspring?

Let’s speak about having babies, namely air plant babies! Tillandsia, often known as air plants, are notoriously difficult to produce from seed, hence most Tillandsia nurseries prefer to grow air plants through propagation. In order to extend our supply of air plants and create some very robust Tillandsia specimens, we at Air Plant Design Studio rely on propagation.

An air plant will generate offsets once it has completed the blooming cycle, or “pups under ideal circumstances. The offsets develop differently depending on the Tillandsia species; some air plants produce pups near the base or root system, while others sprout them from beneath one of, but this air plant really acts as protection for the young Tillandsia pup that has sprouted beneath it.

Following blooming, air plants often produce 1 to 3 pups. Many, many more can be produced by some types.

When offsets have grown to a size that is roughly one-third that of the mother plant, you can carefully remove them. With the right conditions and care, the pup will then proceed through its own lifespan, developing into a larger animal that eventually blooms and gives birth to its own offsets. While holding the mother plant, carefully pull on the pup’s base to remove it. If you must use excessive force to separate an offset that is ready to be removed, we advise leaving it intact. This offset should be able to be removed without harming mother or child.

The formation will be somewhat influenced by how you keep them; for instance, by hanging clumping ionantha air plants, the pups will be given room to grow in all directions and should eventually form a spherical clump. These air plant clumps can create several blooms under the correct circumstances as the individual pups develop through maturity, bloom, and continue to produce their own pups.

In most cases, air plants produce pups or offsets after blooming. At some time in their life cycle, every Tillandsia will go through this process, however certain species, like the xerographica air plant, bloom and produce pups much more slowly. Tillandsia need a lot of water, air flow, light (your air plant’s preferred level and intensity will vary according on type), and light in order to bloom and generate offsets.
