Petunias are a member of the Solanaceae family, which also contains well-known plants like Nicotiana, tomatoes, and peppers. Petunias are fragile annuals that require a lot of sunlight and sufficient moisture to thrive. In the ideal environment, they bloom all summer long and well into the fall. If left to their own ways, they might reproduce via seed, but the flowers won’t have the same hue as the parent plants’.
What should you do with petunias after the season is over?
The first option is to place the plant in a dormant state somewhere that is sheltered from frost, such a garage. The second option is to care for the petunia like a houseplant and maintain it in a bright area of the house.
Remember that the majority of petunias are perennials with a limited lifespan; they typically bloom for just three to five years.
As Dormant Plants
The simplest method for keeping petunias alive is this. While some plants, like fuchsias and geraniums, do well when grown indoors as houseplants, cultivating petunias that way can be a bit of a challenge.
This is due in part to the fact that you are forcing these plants to thrive indoors under artificial conditions because they normally go dormant when the days get shorter.
Trim your petunia back once you become aware that a freeze is imminent or when the temperature starts to consistently fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. You should remove all of the plant’s blossoms and trim the stalks back by at least a third.
You should dig up your petunia and knock or wash away all of the soil from around the roots if it isn’t currently growing in a container.
Look closely at the plant for any indications of illness or pests. Since many pests hide or flee the plant when it is disturbed, you might not see them there, so keep an eye out for droppings, eggs, or webbing.
In your home, where they could infect any more plants you have there, you do not want to introduce these pests or disease pathogens.
Put the transplant into a container big enough to hold the root ball. It should have sufficient drainage and be filled with brand-new potting soil.
Put it in the brightest area of the house you have access to. Ideally, the plant should be put in full sunlight, but if necessary, you can add some grow lights to help supplement the available natural light.
Reduce the quantity of light the plant is receiving gradually to try to match the length of daylight that the plant is now experiencing outside.
You first want to water as usual as well. Every week, lessen the amount until the soil feels dry for an additional half-inch before watering.
In other words, the soil should feel constantly moist throughout the first week. The top half-inch should be given a week to dry out. Before you water again the next week, the top inch of soil should feel dry.
Within a month or two, the plant will lose all of its leaves. Although it may not look appealing, the plant is still alive; it has simply entered a dormant state and is directing its energy toward the roots rather than foliage or blooms.
Stop watering at that point, get rid of any leftover leaves that have fallen, and relocate the pot to a dim area, such your garage or basement.
Your petunia shouldn’t freeze, but it shouldn’t be too cold either. A temperature of between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit is optimal.
It’s time to give your plant a rest right now. During dormancy, no additional watering or special attention is needed; simply make sure your plants have the right temperature and low light levels in their temporary home.
About six weeks before to the latest anticipated frost date in your area, reverse the procedure by gradually adding more water and relocating the pot to a more sunny area of the house.
You want to expose the plant to gradually increasing levels of daylight each day, just as you gradually decreased the light to keep up with the declining daylight outdoors.
Consequently, place it in a location where it will get a few hours of indirect light and a couple of hours of direct sunshine (or supplemental light). Increase this gradually over a few weeks until it can sit in the sunlight.
The petunia should be hardened off for a week before being placed back outside full-time once the last average frost date of the season has passed, provided that there is no chance of freezing weather.
For the plant to harden off, you must leave it outside in a protected area with indirect sunlight for an hour before bringing it inside again. Give it an extra hour outside the next day.
Add an hour on the third day, another on the next, and so forth, until it can withstand a full day in the sun and is prepared to go back outside.
You may now care for your plant in the same ways you would any petunia in terms of water, fertilizer, and sunlight.
It can either be planted in the ground or replanted in a bigger container. We were able to place the plant in a small container while it was dormant, but now that it is actively growing, it will require more space.

As Houseplants
The benefit of using this method is that you can continue to enjoy your petunias all year long. The difficulty, though, is that your plant will wish to become dormant. For active growth, petunias require a lot of sunlight.
As stated in the section above, bring your plant indoors, but don’t prune it. Dead leaves and blooms should only be removed.
Place the pot in a place that gets enough of sunlight, and add a grow light to help during the shorter winter days.
If you don’t get at least 10 hours of light each day naturally in the winter, you’ll need to use the grow lamp for a portion of the day to keep your petunia from falling dormant.
Use an all-purpose fertilizer made for plants growing in containers every six weeks to fertilize your plants.
This should ensure that your petunia continues to develop over the winter (though most likely without blossoms), but if it does manage to drop its leaves, proceed as if it had gone dormant as stated above.
Petunias increase every year, right?
Only the warmest regions of the United States can support them as perennials (USDA zones 10 and 11). Petunia x hybrida is an annual, thus most gardeners treat it as such and replace it every year.
After flowering, what should petunias be used for?
One of the most popular summer bedding plants in our region is the petunia, which blooms from mid-summer until the first hard frosts of autumn. Their profusion of flowers fills gardens with wonderful color.
The trailing kinds liven up hanging baskets and flow down the edges of containers, while the compact, bushy varieties are ideal for planting in beds and borders.
Petunia flowers come in a vast array of colors, single and double blooms, smooth or ruffled petals, solid single, striped, veined, or picotee-edged colors, and even fragrance. The issue of ancient petunia types turning to mush in a wet summer has also been eradicated by recent breeding.
Petunias are perennial, despite the fact that the majority of bedding kinds are produced from seed annually as annuals. The perennial trailing varieties, like Surfinias, are cultivated from cuttings or young plants.
Cultivation
Although they will tolerate a little moderate shade during the hot, sunny summers, petunias like to be cultivated in full sun. They thrive on soil that is rich in nutrients, moist but well-drained. To keep moisture in sandy soils that drain very well, add lots of organic matter to the soil, such as garden compost, well-rotted manure, or other soil-improving materials.
Petunia varieties
Grandifloras, which have larger flowers, or multifloras, which have smaller flowers and are more resilient to rain, are the two varieties used as bedding.
The Surfinia, Wave, Tumbelina, Supertunia, and Cascadia series of petunias spread or trail.
Sowing petunias
Petunias can be grown from seeds inside with warmth in cell trays, seed trays, or tiny pots at a temperature of 18 to 24C as an annual or bedding plant (65-75F).
When plants are big enough to handle, prick them out into cell trays or tiny pots and let them continue to grow at a temperature of 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 15 degrees Celsius) in good light.
Before planting the seedlings outdoors once all danger of frost has passed, gradually acclimate them to outdoor circumstances for 7 to 10 days.
Young petunia seedlings are available from garden centers and mail-order suppliers in the late winter/early spring if you don’t have the resources to grow them from seed.
Planting petunias
Make a good-sized planting hole that can readily fit the rootball. Fork in a layer of organic material, such as compost or planting compost, at the bottom of the hole.
Place the rootball in the planting hole, adjusting the planting depth (except for hardy fuchsias) until the top of the roots is level with the soil surface and the rootball is planted at the same depth as it was growing. Fill the planting hole with the excavated soil after adding more organic matter to it. Put some granular general feed on the soil and thoroughly wet it in. The soil can be kept moist and weeds can be controlled by adding a 5-7.5cm (2-3in) deep mulch of well-rotted garden compost or something similar over the soil. If you have a warm greenhouse, you can plant baskets and containers in the spring, let the plants mature, and then move them outside in late May or early June. You’ll have flowers earlier in the summer if you do this.
How to care for petunias
When there are protracted dry spells in the summer, water the soil frequently to keep it moist. Plants in containers will require routine, possibly daily watering with the intention of maintaining evenly moist compost. But be careful not to overwater, as this may make the plants leggy and produce few blossoms.
To ensure a steady supply of blossoms throughout the summer, feed your plants with a liquid plant food on a regular basis. Up to the first autumnal frosts, a high potash liquid plant feeding will promote more, better blooms.
The show will last longer if faded blooms and any sprouting seed pods are removed. Cut back straggly plants severely before feeding them with a liquid plant food to encourage fresh new growth and an abundance of blossoms.
Fall is the greatest time to dig up and compost bedding petunias that have been harmed by frost.
Overwintering petunias
Trailing perennial kinds can be pruned back severely in the fall, cleaned up by removing any dead or broken growth, and then gently lifted. They should be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location, preferably a greenhouse or cool conservatory, in pots just large enough to hold the rootball and with some fresh potting compost around the sides.
Propagating perennial petunias
Cuttings taken in March or April from plants that overwintered or in August or early September from perennial, trailing kinds can be used to create new plants.
Select young, robust, vigorous stems that aren’t in bloom. Cut back one or two stems at the back of the plants severely to promote vigorous regeneration if you are unable to locate adequate growth. collect clippings 7.5–10 cm (3–4 in) long and positioned immediately below the node or junction of a leaf. In pots of gritted cuttings compost, place five or six cuttings at the base of the lowest leaves after removing the leaves from the lower two-thirds of the stem. Put the pots in a propagator or a plastic bag and set them somewhere with good light—but not in the sun—to root.
In two to three weeks, the cuttings should have taken, at which point they can be potted up separately and continued to grow.
Petunias can they self-pollinate?
Petunias are flowering plants in the Solanaceae family that can withstand weather conditions in planting zones 10 and 11. These sun-loving plants produce blooms with stamens and pistils, or the male and female reproductive parts, but they won’t self-pollinate. In order to transmit pollen from one flower to another, pollination must therefore happen through insects or wind. You can also act like an insect and spread pollen by yourself.
- Select a petunia plant that is robust and has just blossomed. In one of the plant’s blossoms, lightly run your fingertip over the yellow pollen on the anthers. The flower is prepared to pollinate other flowers if the pollen adheres to your nail.
- When pollinating a petunia flower, look for the stigma that protrudes from the center. Give it a light touch with your finger. The blooms are ready for pollination if they are shiny and sticky to the touch.
- To sterilize a pair of tweezers, dampen a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and rub it over the tools. Let the tweezers dry naturally.
- Your non-dominant hand should be used to grasp the parent petunia bloom. Take hold of the filament’s base inside the flower with the help of the tweezers. The slender stem known as the filament supports the pollen-filled anther in place. To detach the filament from the flower while keeping the anther and pollen in tact, pull upward.
- The yellow pollen will stick to the stigma of the recipient petunia flower if the anther is rubbed over it. This will allow you to pollinate as many flowers as you desire.
- Instead of removing the stamen, you can brush pollen from the parent flower onto the stigma of the recipient plant using a little paintbrush.
A hybrid of the two original plants should result from the combination of the genetic material (RNA) from the two flowers when the pollen from one is delivered to the stigma of the other bloom. Because plants share comparable genes, the hybrid may not appear to have undergone any visible alterations. Simply keep the seeds from your favorite blooms and plant them the following year if you only want plants with the same traits from year to year.

Even though it wasn’t planned, this discovery provided us with an exciting opportunity to learn more about pollination. While some plants, like peas, do a good job of self-pollinating, others, like petunias, are built in such a way as to guarantee cross-pollination. Encourage your kids to design an experiment to address their inquiries if they have lots of them and are keen to learn more about cross-pollination. For instance:

Consider utilizing Wisconsin Fast Plants for this experiment, which, when cultivated under continuous lighting, complete their full life cycle in less than a month. Fast Plants’ blooms feature lengthy pistils and small stamens, which makes self-pollination challenging, if not impossible. Once the plants have produced their seeds, allow the fruits to mature before counting and grading the seeds. Which type of plant produces more seeds, self-pollinated or cross-pollinated? Were the seeds’ sizes and stages of development different? Try attempting to germinate the seeds from each group of plants, either on damp paper towels or moist soil.
