Cacti have a difficult time growing and spreading in desert soil because it is frequently dense and compacted.

On the other hand, aerated cactus soil for potted specimens makes things simple and might hasten growth, flowering, and, for species that reproduce, you might even see more little baby cacti growing!

You specifically want materials that are airy and light. Two wonderful choices are perlite and pumice.

These are both forms of naturally occurring stone that are extremely porous, making them surprisingly lightweight for stones.

Better Drainage

There are various strategies to produce well-drained soils. First, there should be only a small amount of soakable hydrophilic materials in the soil itself, such as peat moss or wood shavings.

Perlite, coarse grit, or even small stones should be present in significant amounts, as should other elevated, comparatively non-absorbent materials.

Always check for drainage holes in the planting container; this is especially crucial when growing cactus.

Put some gravel or stones in the bottom of the container. This will prevent the soil from clogging the drainage openings.

Do succulents require specific potting soil?

  • You can select a better pot or planter. Choosing a pot or container to house the plants in is one of the things I enjoy most about repotting. A container that is a few inches larger than the nursery pot it was originally planted in is ideal so that the plant has space to grow but is not so large that you run the risk of the plant spending too much time in moist soil. It’s acceptable for some folks to reuse the same nursery pot, but you can also get creative with your selections.

Before repotting succulents, should you water them?

Repotting a succulent is necessary if its roots are cramming the container or if it needs to grow larger for any other reason.

Early spring or early fall, just before their growing season begins, are the ideal times of year for repotting succulents.

Since they can only remain in a pot for two years before beginning to exhibit signs of potted fatigue, which can eventually result in root rot and other issues, repotting should always be done at least every two years.

Before being repotted, succulents need to be watered for a few days to allow them to dry out.

This is due to the fact that when you water them, they do absorb moisture, and that should give your succulents’ roots enough time to absorb all possible moisture before being replanted.

Additionally, it is important to do this to give them time to become used to their new pot and soil, which is a little bit drier than their previous environment.

Your succulents must dry out for a few days before you may clear the old soil from the roots with water while repotting them.

How frequently do succulents need to be watered?

During the months that are not winter, when the temperature is above 40 degrees, you should water your succulents every other week. You should only water your succulent once a month in the winter (when the temperature falls below 40 degrees), as it goes dormant at this period.

A few situations constitute an exception to this rule. Because their tiny leaves can’t hold as much water as other varieties with larger leaves, some varieties of succulents need to be watered more frequently. In the non-winter months, feel free to give these small leaf succulents a water if they appear to be thirsty. When they are thirsty, succulents generally exhibit a wrinkled appearance. Size

Choose a pot that is just big enough for the plant to grow in, but not too big. The circumference of the appropriate pot is 5–10% greater than the size of the plant. Choose pots with a maximum excess space around the sides of an inch or two. The delicate roots will spread if the pot is too big before the plant has a chance to develop. There won’t be any room for the roots to spread in a pot that is too tiny.

Style

The ideal pot should not only complement your style and decor but also the physical properties of the plant. Tall pots look excellent with upright-growing succulents, like aloe. Low-growing cultivars, like Echeveria, look fantastic in little pots. Not to mention spillers with trailing growth tendencies like String of Pearls. Spillers in shallow pots or hanging plants look fantastic and grow well.

Material

There are many different types of materials for pots. The most prevalent materials are wood, terracotta, metal, ceramic, and resin. Terracotta or ceramic pots work best for succulent plants. Both of these materials allow for proper air and water circulation because they are both breathable. Just keep in mind that both ceramic and terracotta are weighty, especially after adding soil and plants.

Pick resin or plastic pots for larger plants, especially ones you plan to move around. Your back will thank you for using those lighter pots as you move or reposition plants.

Drainage

Before you plant and cultivate succulents, the most important thing to understand is that they don’t like a lot of water. Even before you develop a watering schedule, this is relevant. Without adequate drainage, water that accumulates at the bottom of a container without anywhere to go may cause root rot in your succulent.
