The wild Monstera Deliciosa, also called a Swiss Cheese Plant, spreads its aerial roots to adjacent trees, which serve as a kind of trellis for the plant to climb into the highest reaches of the rainforest canopy. The Monstera only uses the host tree as a means of accessing sunlight, unlike other plants that do the same thing.
Due to the abundance of tall trees in the upper levels of the canopy, sunlight rarely reaches the lower levels of the rainforest. As a result, many tropical plants, like the Monstera deliciosa, have evolved special strategies for obtaining enough sunshine. The growth of the plant’s aerial roots and the behavior of the Monstera seedlings are the best examples of this.
